Company History
The School District of Clayton
The School District of Clayton's goal is to recognize individual differences and to provide each child with a positive and complete educational experience. To achieve this goal, Clayton maintains a pupil teacher ratio of about 13:1 at the elementary level, about 12:1 at the secondary, and stresses individualized instruction at each grade level. The certificated staff of the District total 247, including teachers, administrators, counselors, and librarians.
Classroom teachers have 16 or more years experience and 85% hold master's degrees. Their work is complemented by resource teachers, interns, clerks, and general education staff. Each school has a library exceeding national standards and a full time librarian. Each school has at least one counselor, and basic instruction is augmented by regular instruction in art, music, physical education, and computers.
Clayton students excel academically. At CHS, about 20 Advanced Placement courses are available. Typically, 96% of our graduates go on to two and four year colleges (84% attended 4-year colleges). Last year the composite mean SAT Verbal score was 644, and average SAT Math score was 648. The average ACT composite score during the same time period was 25.3.
Every year a large number of students are recognized as National Merit and Commended Scholars. The Class of 2007 had 13 finalists and 14 commended students. Clayton students, K-12, compare favorably in ability and achievement with students from independent schools and select suburban districts nationally, including the eastern seaboard and the west coast.
Clayton offers a full range of extracurricular activities and special programs. Before and after school care is available in each of our elementary schools. Activity programs, intramural sports and city sponsored athletic leagues provide other afternoon, evening and weekend options for students of all ages. An eight-week, K-8 summer recreation program is offered every summer for patron students. Creative summer institutes and high school summer program offer additional challenges.
Since 1981, the District has participated in a student voluntary transfer desegregation program with the City of St. Louis.
